Licensing Methods available to Military Members

VALOR Pathway
VALOR for active-duty members is intended for those seeking health care licensure in Florida who have been practicing in their profession for at least 3 years, hold an active license in another state in the profession for which they are applying, and are planning to be honorably discharged in the near future.
Initial licensing fees, initial application fees, and initial unlicensed activity fees are waived. VALOR’s intention is to help ease the professional transition from military to civilian life.
VALOR for veterans is intended for those seeking health care licensure in Florida who have been practicing in their profession for at least 3 years, hold an active license in another state in the profession for which they are applying, and have been honorably discharged within the last six months.
Initial licensing fees, initial application fees, and initial unlicensed activity fees are waived. VALOR’s intention is to help ease the professional transition from military to civilian life.
- Must provide a DD214 (NBG Form 22‐ National Guard) showing an honorable discharge within 6 months prior to submission of application or be able to provide a letter from the commanding officer stating a future honorable discharge date that includes: separation type, character of service ‐ honorable, and the expected date of discharge. This discharge date can be anytime in the future.
- Must hold an active license in the profession you are applying.
- Must have actively practiced the profession for which he or she is applying for the 3 years preceding the date of application.
- Background screening if it's required by the profession for which you are applying.
Note: Active-duty members working in health care specialties not requiring a state license to practice within the military may be eligible to leverage their military experience and training toward securing a state license in a corresponding profession.
Temporary Military Platform
The Temporary Military Platform certificate is designed to authorize active duty military members to train in a nonmilitary health care provider setting for a 6-month term. It may be renewed upon proof of continuing active duty assignment in Florida and evidence that the military member continues to be a military platform participant.
- Has an active license in the profession in which they are applying.
- Can provide active-duty orders.
- Can provide proof they are practicing pursuant to a military platform, with current dates and signatures.
- External Resource Sharing Agreement.
- Training Affiliation Agreement (TAA).
VALOR Pathway for the Spouse of an Active-duty Member
VALOR for spouses of active-duty members is intended for those seeking health care licensure in Florida who have been practicing in their profession for at least 3 years, hold an active license in another state in the profession for which they are applying, and can provide their spouse’s active-duty orders. These orders do not have to be specific to Florida.
Initial licensing fees, initial application fees, and initial unlicensed activity fees are waived.
- Proof of Marriage (marriage license).
- Spouse’s Duty Orders (not required to be in Florida)
- Must hold an active license in the profession you are applying.
- Must have actively practiced the profession for the three years preceding the date of submission of the application.
- Background screening if it's required by the profession for which you are applying.
License for the Spouse of an Active-Duty Member of the Armed Forces
This pathway differs from VALOR Spouse (which has a three-year practice requirement). License for the Spouse of an Active-Duty Member of the Armed Forces is intended for those seeking health care licensure in Florida who currently hold an active license in their profession and whose spouse is on active duty in this state.
Initial licensing fees, initial application fees, and initial unlicensed activity fees are waived.
Applicable for active-duty spouses only.
- Proof of Marriage (marriage license).
- Spouse’s current duty station orders in Florida.
- Must hold an active license with no discipline.
- Background screening.
- Proof that they meet all other licensure requirements.
Fee Waiver
A general fee waiver of the initial licensing fee, initial application fee, and initial unlicensed activity fee will be applied to applications if you have been honorably discharged from the military at any point in the past. Applicants can apply for a fee waiver up to six months before discharge. This differs from the VALOR or License for the Spouse of an Active-Duty Member of the Armed Forces pathways.
A general fee waiver of the initial licensing fee, initial application fee, and initial unlicensed activity will be applied to applications if your spouse has been honorably discharged from the military at any point in the past. Applicants can apply for a fee waiver up to six months before spousal discharge. This differs from the VALOR or License for the Spouse of an Active-Duty Member of the Armed Forces pathways.
- Must provide the spouse’s DD214 (NGB Form 22‐ National Guard) showing an honorable discharge.
- Proof of Marriage (marriage license).
- Must provide a DD214 (NBG Form 22‐ National Guard) showing an honorable discharge.
Temporary Certificate to Practice in Areas of Critical Need
The Department offers additional armed forces licensure support:
- Opportunities for eligible health care practitioners to receive a temporary certificate to practice in areas of critical need.
