Background Screening Initiate a Screening
Our Background Screening Policy
As of July 1, 2025, health care practitioners must comply with background screening requirements when applying for initial licensure or renewing their license.
Applicants for initial and renewal licensure are both required to comply.
The following professions are not required to complete a background screening under section 456.0135(1)(b), Florida Statutes, unless applying through the military active-duty spouse licensure pathway.
- Emergency Medical Technicians
- Paramedics
- Pharmacy Interns
- Registered Pharmacy Technicians
- Radiologic Technologists
Plan Ahead to Avoid Delays
The Department cannot issue or renew a license until a background screening has been completed.
Practitioners renewing a license must complete all screening requirements within 90 days of the license expiration date.
Check the status of your fingerprints before renewing your license, as fingerprint retention is separate from the licensure renewal process. Because you must retain your fingerprints every five years, it is important to complete this during the designated retention window, which opens 75 days before your fingerprint expiration date and closes 15 days before it.
If your fingerprints expire after your license renewal, you’ll be charged a $43.25 retention fee at renewal. As long as your fingerprints are valid and on file, you can skip the fingerprinting process when renewing. If you do not retain your fingerprints during the 60-day window, you must complete a new screening, and the Department cannot extend the fingerprint retention window.
